GENERATION GAPS – WHAT DEFINES A GENERATION AND WHAT ARE THEY?

No matter what we do, where we work, which club or organization we belong to, even at our own home (if you have kids, we live with parents or if parents live with us); we are all surrounded by people from different generations.

Each Generation has its own Characteristics, Values and Attitudes. To Work with, Business with, have relationship with different Generation, We must Understand and Communicate Effectively with other Generation.  

The purpose of this article is to define and identify the various generations present at our surroundings‘. It also provides you enough information that helps you to understand each generation and gives you information on how to work with, live with, deal with, and communicate with different generation. However, due to the size of the article, I am going to break down the total information to smaller pieces (parts) and present one part at a time. This will be part of series of articles to cover characteristics, values and attitudes for all generations.

Part 1: Define and Identify Generations

What defines a generation?

�  A generation is a group of people born during the same period and shares the same attitudes and values.

�  Typically is about 15-20 Years apart. However, there is no law or rule that states we must start a new generation exactly after 15 years or something in that nature.

�  Starting date, usually, depends on a major event that had major impact and affected on the life of people in preceding Year(s). Examples are: ending a long time war and start having a normal and peaceful life, start living in a long and lengthy war, major technology introduced that impacted the life of people and how they work and communicate with each other such as facebook and other social medias, texting and video chatting, using smart devices such as Tablets, iPhones, iPads, etc.  

What Generations Exist

�  Traditionalist or Silent (Born 1945 and Prior)

�  Baby Boomers (Born 1946 and 1964)

�  Generation X (Born 1965 and 1978)

�  Generation Y (Born 1979 and 1995)

�  Generation Z (Born 1996 – and after)
